BioEASI K-12 Science Art
Challenge
Have you ever wondered why all of the original
scientists, Leonardo, Galileo, DaVinci, and even Darwin, were also artists?
Science and the arts are necessarily interconnected since both disciplines seek
a means to observe, understand and explain the world; yet, because the subjects
are now taught separately, their similarities are difficult to recognize. Think
of the lost creative input to the sciences! Inspire your students to discover
new ways to look at science and the world by encouraging them to make a piece
for the "Science Art Challenge" contest.

StudentTECH Summer Science and Technology Workshops
Structures in Action!
Friday, July 10, 2009 - 9:00am -3:30pm
Join engineers
from the Department of Structural Engineering and learn about basic concepts of
structural design! Students will design a simple truss bridge, solve for the
forces in the bridge mathematically, build a model of their structure and then
test their bridge in a competition to see how closely they can predict when the
bridge will fail. The seminar objectives are to encourage students to continue
their education in science and engineering through understanding the importance
and challenges of engineering, and how basic science and mathematics can be used
to solve real-life problems. Presented by Dr. Lelli Van Den Einde,
University of California, San Diego Course fee: $50.00 Download Complete Workshop

2D-3D
Insani-D! Monday- Wednesday, July 13-15, 2009 - 8:30am
-3:00pm
In this fun, exciting three-day hands-on workshop, students will
learn to build cool 2D and 3D interactive animations. On the first day, you'll
learn how to use Flash, the powerful 2D animation tool and the most popular tool
on the Internet. On the second day you'll learn Blender, the free 3D animation
and rendering tool used by many game developers. On the third day, students will
get some real hands-on game development experience using Gamemaker and Popfly.
Students will each get their own account on the StudentTECH course site where
they can upload and share their games and animations with others. Students will
be provided with all of the source files used in this workshop, too!

Introduction to Creative Applications in
Multimedia Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 8:30am
-3:00pm
Come and join us for an innovative day of hands-on multimedia
exploration where you will be introduced to a range of creative applications for
the computer – all using free, open source software. You are invited to bring
your own drawings, sketches, photographs – anything you would like to “capture”
into the computer. Then you can use your captured material with the workshop
software to create images, animations and games. Go behind the scenes to you can
explore your own creative ideas and see the results! All participants will
receive a USB drive so you can store your work and continue working on your
projects at home or wherever you can plug in the USB drive! Presented by

Creative Concepts
in Digital Art & Design: Character/Creature Design!
Friday, July 17, 2009 - 8:30am -3:00pm
Do you want to
create your own characters and worlds? Do you dream of being a part of a team of
creative professionals working on creating the next generation of amazing films
and video games? If so, then this workshop is for you! Students will be exposed
to many of the basic techniques and common approaches to development and
conceptual art, including the familiar skills of drawing, painting and
composition as synthesized through the digital medium, but also
silhouette/contour design, using abstraction in development, and using
photographic reference and the basics of image sampling. At the end of this
exciting, intensive workshop, students can expect to have generated their very
own original character/creature design and will be well on their way to
developing their skills as a contemporary illustrator with an above average
working knowledge of digital art creation software Presented by Scott
